Ex-champion Kuznetsova loses to Jankovic
NEW YORK, Sep 4 (Reuters) Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was stunned by Serbian 19th seed Jelena Jankovic 6-7 6-3 6-2 in the fourth round of the US Open today.
Russian sixth seed Kuznetsova, the 2004 Open champion, had 46 unforced errors and 41 winners in the two-hour, 19-minute match on the Grandstand court.
''Against me, it's tough to make a winner because I anticipate quite well,'' Jankovic told reporters. ''So I think sometimes she maybe went for too much because she gets frustrated that maybe I'm going to get the ball.
''I think overall, it was a really good match. We were both hitting the balls hard. There were a lot of great shots.
''Some of the shots I hit I was laughing at, surprised (that they went in). She'd hit an overhead and I'd just smack a winner back.'' Jankovic, ranked 20th in the world, blasted 37 winners but had only 24 unforced errors to earn her first quarter-final appearance in a grand slam.
The 21-year-old will face Russian Elena Dementieva in the quarter-finals.
Jankovic had a spasm in her stomach and had to call the trainer to the court but after the match said she was fine and would have no problem against Dementieva.
