Election Commission should not be criticised: Krishnamurthy

New Delhi, Sep 5 (UNI) Former Election Commisioner Dr G V G Krishnamurthy today strongly disapproved the views expressed by the Communist Party of India (Marxists) (CPI)(M) on curbing the powers and authority of the Election Commission.

Talking to newspersons here he said, ''no one should criticise the institution, but individuals could be criticised for their various decisions.'' ''The Election Commission plays a very important role in any democracy and if attempts are being made to curb its role, then it will have its bearing on the entire democratic process,'' he added.

Dr Krishnamurthy said Election Commission as an institution is the best independent ''refree'' for conducting free and fair election in the country.

''How can there be a match without a referee,'' he asked.

''One could criticise the work done by institutions but not the institutions, as they are the very basis of our democracy,'' he added.
