Surat libraries lost valuable books

Surat, Sept 4 (UNI) Many libraries in Surat lost valuable books and important documents in the recent flood, including those that are the only surviving material on the history of the city.

Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIIT) College has lost about 3,000 books in the flood, librarian B V Ghose informed here today.

According to Mr Ghose, the library has lost many valuable reference books and the total loss is calculated at around Rs 3.5 crore.

The central library in Surat, Veer Narmad Library has lost not only many of its books but also some important documents that have connections with the history of Surat.

Some of the important documents of Surat Municipal Corporation, like the earliest records of the city's history, gazettes and town planning documents were kept in the library.

Librarian J D Suthar informed that more than 1,000 such books were lost in the flood. Veer Narmad Library also lost around 3000 Farsi and Urdu books, including some of which were more than 100 years old.

Among the rare books damaged include ''Ain-e-Surat'', a history of Surat Nawabs. Lady Kikabhai Library of Sarvajainik Educational Trust also lost more than 50,000 books, informed sources at the trust.

Many of the libraries in the city like 150-year old Andrews Library at Chowk and Persian Library at Nanpura were having rare manuscripts and old books. Both these libraries suffered heavy loss in the floods and many important historical material were lost forever.
