Vijayawada, Sep 4 (UNI) Rich tributes were paid to Freedom Fighter and Social Reformer Saraswathi Gora at a condolence meeting here last night.

People from various walks of life recalled Ms Gora's commendable work and positive approach in dealing with various social and political problems.

Speakers said Ms Gora promoted atheism as a positive way of life and after her husband's demise, headed the Atheist Centre for three decades with determination, remarkable clarity of thought and dogged pursuit.

Ms Gora also fought for political independence of the country. In the post-colonial period, she led many struggles championing economic and political equality.

She did not take the pension offered to freedom fighters and stayed in 'C' class in jail along with other prisoners though she was offered 'A' class by the judges.

London-based International Humanist and Ethical Union Executive Director Babu Gogineni termed her death on August 19 as a personal loss for humanists and rationalists across the world.
