Mumbai blasts: Al Badr commander in police custody

Mumbai, Sep 3: A local court here today remanded Pakistan national and self-styled Divisional Commander of Al-Badr Touhfeen Akmal Hashmi, arrested in connection with the 7/11 Mumbai blasts, to police custody till September 13.

Akmal was earlier arrested in Jammu and Kashmir on August 23 and was brought to Mumbai late last evening.

He was produced before a holiday court here and the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) moved a remand application, praying for custodial interrogation of Hashmi alias Abu Amad for his alleged involvement in Mahim blast, one in the series of the seven blast that had rocked Mumbai on July 11. The court remanded him to police custody till September 13.

The accused had earlier admitted of having information about the perpetrators of the serial blasts in India's commercial capital on July 11, killing as many as 200 people and injuring over 700.

He had revealed that 17 terrorists of the banned Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were asked to carry out blasts in Mumbai. While 16 ultras returned safe, one might have been killed in the blast. He also claimed to be working for the Pakistani Army before joining militant cadres.

Hashmi, the Al Badr Divisional Commander for Jammu and Udhampur areas, was arrested by troops of 3 Para (SF) from Nandmarg forest near Shopian in Kulgam area of south Kashmir on August 23.
