Massive desilting work in flood carrying channels

Tiruchirapalli, Sept 3, (UNI) Massive desilting work was underway in the channels carrying flood waters in the city at an outlay of Rs 75 lakh, Tamil Nadu Transport Minister K N Nehru said.

Talking to news persons, after inspecting the desilting works he said as the channels were being deposited with sand, silt and free flow of rain water was not possible. To protect the residents of the city anticipating the monsoon period, the desilting work was undertaken by the district administration with a financial support of Rs 26 lakh from the city corporation.

He said encroachments in these channels were also ordered to be removed by the officials concerned.

Mr Nehru said state government asked the city corporation to prepare a detailed project report for strenghtening the channel bunds with concrete structure at a cost of Rs 25 crore.
