Dempo down Salgaocar, Sporting trounce Vasco

Margao, Sep 2 (UNI) A brace by Anthony Perira enabled defending champion Dempo overpower arch rivals Salgaocar 2-1 in the GFA Hutch professional football league championship match here today.

This was Salgaocar's first defeat in their fifth outings so far.

In an evenly balanced encounter, Dempo moved ahead in the 7th minute through Anthony Pereira off a well-measured pass from Valeriano Rebello.

The lead was short-lived and Salgaocar restored parity in the 11th minute through Jelius Akepele who headed in a flag kick taken by Rochus Lamare 1-1.

However, Dempo took the lead again the 31st minute through Anthony Pereira who headed in a pass from Clifftan Gonsalves 2-1.

The second half failed to produce any goal as play was restricted to midfield for the major part.

In the second match played at Duler Ground, Mapusa, a fine brace by ''Man of the Match'' Niccolau Borgues enabled Sporting Club de Goa humble Vasco Sports Club by 3-1 and earned full points.

Sporting, who enjoyed an upper hand right from the word go, surged ahead in the 30th minute through Belo Razak off a free kick from outside the box. They consolidated their lead in the 38th minute through Niccolau Borgues off a cross pass from Rajesh Meteei to make it 2-0 at half time.

After the cross over, Sporting's Niccolau Borgues scored his second goal after collecting a through pass from Joe Rodrigues. He dodged past a couple of rival defenders and also the goalkeeper and shot home 3-0.

Vasco reduced the margin in the 80th minute through substitute Agnelo D'souza, whose powerful 30-yard shot landed straight into the net 3-1.
