Cong should stick to NCMP to avert mid-term poll: Yechury

Vijayawada, Sep 2 (UNI) Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury tonight warned that the Congress should adhere strictly to the National Common Minimum Programme (NCMP) to avert mid-term election to the Lok Sabha.

Talking to reporters here about the speculation made by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) President K Chandrasekhar Rao that there was a possible chance of mid-term general elections next year, Mr Yechury said the CPI (M) would not create any political uncertainity on its own.

On the party's opposing stand on a separate Telangana state, he said the party had been committed to the formation of linguistic states for the past 50 years and there were only 29 demands from different political parties in the country to carve separate states based on language.

He said the party had opposed the formation of smaller states like Chattisgarh, Uttaranchal and Jharkand during the NDA rule.

He said the Telangana region, which was still under developed, should be brought on the path to development.

About the poll alignment with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Mr Yechury said the party was not against having tie-ups with any political parties, but the only thing was that the other party should stick to the policies like opposing communalism and anti-poor economic policies of the Centre.
