ABVP leader remanded in CID custody
Ujjain, Sep 2 (UNI) ABVP's Madhya Pradesh unit President Shashi Ranjan Akela was today sent in judicial custody till September 15, while its Organising Secretary Vimal Tomar had been remanded in CID custody till September 4 for interrogation in connection with the death of Prof H S Sabharwal during students violence.
Both ABVP leaders were produced before Judicial Magistrate R C Madia here. They were arrested on murder charge on the basis of eye-witness account and video clipping of the violence after abrupt postponement of students union elections at Madhav College on August 26.
As many as 40 leaders -- six were arrested today -- belonging to ABVP, Congress and NSUI were arrested in connection with the violence at the college in which Prof Sabharwal was killed, while another professor M L Nath was assaulted and his face blackened.
Thirty-four accused have been granted bail.
Former principal Shachindra Upadhyaya died on Sunday last on hearing the news about maltreatment by students towards his former colleagues.
Students indulged in vandalism and assaulted teachers after the elections were abruptly postponed by the staff council as only 5 nominations, all by ABVP workers, were filed for 45 posts, while NSUI boycotted elections demanding direct polls.
