Suspected Chikungunya cases reported in coastal areas

Alappuzha, Sep 1 (UNI) The coastal areas of the district are in the grip of an epidemic as more than 600 people were admitted to various hospitals in the last three weeks with suspected symptoms of Chikungunya fever.

According to the district Health department officials here, the fever was most rampant in the coastal area of Cherthala taluk.

As per the details available from 18 Public Health Centres (PHC) and taluk hospital there was a serious threat of an epidemic. Nearly 200 people were admitted to the taluk hospital with fever. Two patients died due to Chikungunya in the Chertala taluk, the officials said.

The blood samples of the deceased were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune for analysis.

More than 100 blood samples were also sent to the NIV for tests and the main problem was getting the results in time, they said.

The primary symptom of Chikungunya fever was the intolerable pain in the joints, they said adding that the high presence of 'Eaudis mosquitoes,' in the coastal areas was a threat to the people's life.

The District Medical Officer said the disease could be deadly, if the patient does not get timely treatment.
