Governor Krishna delivers speech in Kannada

Solapur, Sept 1: Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna who is also the chancellor of universities in the state today delivered his speech in his mother tongue Kannada in the presence of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

The occasion was laying the foundation stone of Rs 5,222 crore western region system strengthening scheme of the Power grid corporation by Dr Singh at Chincoli village, 18 km away from here.

Both, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Union Power minister Sushilkumar Shinde made their speeches in Marathi. When Mr Krishna began his speech in English, there were some murmours and shouting from the audiences.

Later, Mr Deshmukh requested the Governor to speak in Kannada as majority of people of Solapur are well versed with Kannada.

Solapur district borders Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as well.

When the Governor began speaking in Kannada, the locals applauded him.
