New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) The Army today became proud possessors of a ''responsive and latest state-of-the art'' satellite communication network with Signals Officer-in-Chief Lt Gen Davinder Kumar formally inaugurating 'Project Rohini' here.

'Rohini' is a static Large Very Small Aperture Terminal (LVSAT) network based on indigenous satellite and secrecy, capable of proving Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) connectivity for voice, data and video.

The network is centrally managed and controlled by a powerful Network Management System which helps in exercising control over all remote stations.

The fielding of this technology-intensive broadband satellite network will not only address the communications requirements but also enhance the robustness and reliability of the communication infrastructure which the Corps of Signals has established for the Indian Army, said Lt Gen Davinder Kumar -- also Senior Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Signals -- while inaugurating 'Project Rohini'.

The project has been named Rohini in keeping with the established traditions of the Army naming their satellite projects on names of various mythological celestial bodies, important stars and constellations like Shruv, Sapta Rishi, Akash Ganga and the like.

'Project Rohini' has been fielded to meet the Voice and Broadband Data communication requirements of the Indian Army units located in remote areas thus overcoming limitations of terrain and distance.

The network will have its interconnectivity to other Strategic Networks to ensure its optimum utilisation.

The successful implementation of 'Project Rohini' with its unlimited reach by the Corps of Signals along with M/s HCL Comnet and M/s ITI Ltd is yet another step forward to strengthen the communications infrastructure for the Indian Army, Maj Gen VK Sharma -- Additional Director General Telecommunications -- told the gathering -- comprising dignitaries from the Army and the industry -- at the function.

He further highlighted the initiatives undertaken by the 'Information Warriors' (personnel of the Corps of Signals) in equipping the Indian Army with the 'Next Generation Networks'.
