NREGS unique prog for rural poor

Nalgonda,(Andhra Pradesh) Aug 31 (UNI) The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) is a unique programme of the Central Government, Additional Project Director, AP Rural Empoloyment Guarantee Scheme P Venkatesam said today.

Speaking at a symposium organised on the occasion of the five day Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign here, he said so far 4.52 lakh job cards had been issued and Rs 5.29 crore had been disbursed as wages.

Nearly 41,000 works had been identified for taking up under the scheme,he said adding that the main objective of the scheme was to prevent migration of labourers to urban areas in search of work.

Assistant Prof Osmania University P G college J Ravi Kumar said the implementation of the Rural Employment Guarantee Act would stop migration of labour and enable people to take up work in their own villages .

Director Press Information Bureau, Hyderabad Dr.P.J Sudhakar said the NREGC and Right to Information Act would help in strengthning the rural economy.
