Gas-based plant in Yanam: Minister

Pondicherry, Aug 31 (UNI) Ruling out the possibility of the governmnt setting up a gas-based power plant in Pondicherry region, Industries Minister V Vaithilingam told the Legislative Assembly today the administration proposed to set up a gas-based 100 MW power plant in Yanam using the gas available in the Godavari Basin.

Answering a question, Mr Vaithilingam said as there was no possibility of getting gas in Pondicherry, power could be brought from Karaikal or Yanam regions.

A gas-based power plant is to be set up in the private sector in Yanam shortly and the government would also set up a plant near it.

On a supplementary question on the setting up a thermal power plant in Pondicherry, Mr Vaithilingam said the government would have to consider the pollution aspect.
