Environment movement should became people's movement: Jamir

Panaji, Aug 31 (UNI) Goa Governor S C Jamir today stressed the need for a joint initiative to protect the environment.

Mr Jamir said the government, non governmental organizations, individuals, community groups, the industry, and particularly the younger generation, should work as partners to protect the environment.

Speaking after inaugurating a three-day seventh annual greentech international conference on environment management at Dona Paula near here, he said environment movement should became people's movement. There is a need to create awareness among the public in general, and the children and youth in particular, he said.

Unless environmental concerns percolate to the grassroots and become part of our day-to-day life, its economical benefits will not become visible, he added.

Deputy Chief Minister Wilfred D'Souza, was also present on the occason.

The Governor also distributd awards to companies which have contributed towards environment management. Mr P N Ojha, managing director of Bihar Caustic and Chemicals, was presented with the life-time achivement award for his crusade for the cause of environment.
