CBI files second chargesheet in Tehelka tape case
New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) The CBI today filed the second chargesheet in connection with the 'Tehelka' Tape Cases in the Court of the Special Judge here.
The chargesheet was filed against a Staff Officer (now dismissed) H C Pant of the Ordnance Factory Cell under Ministry of Defence Production, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 for demanding and accepting Rs 70,000 bribe to facilitate procurement of order for supply of Hand-Held Thermal Imagers (HHTI) to the Indian army.
The Special Judge has taken cognizance of the chargesheet and has ordered for issue of notice for appearance of the accused on August 27 this year.
The FIR against the accused officer was registered on December 6, 2004.
Investigations revealed that within a short span of about two weeks (Nov 22 to Dec 12, 2000) the accused held seven meetings with the representative of Tehelka.com, where he gave advice on how the company should operate while offering to introduce them to various senior Army and civilian officers and political leaders.
He introduced the representative of the Company to a number of businessmen allegedly involved in defence procurements for the purposes of getting favourable orders from the Ministry of Defence in respect of HHTI offered to be supplied by the fictitious firm M/s West End International based in London.
Accused Pant had been suspended after the story was 'exposed' under 'Operation Westend' on March 13, 2001 by Tehelka.com, and later dismissed on June 13 this year after disciplinary enquiries were conducted.
Tehelka.Com, a News portal, had conducted a sting operation in 2000-01 for exposing corruption in Defence procurements while posing as pepresentatives of a fictitious firm M/s West End International, London, purportedly engaged in supply of defence related equipments.
Last month, the CBI had filed the first chargesheet in the case against Former BJP President Bangaru Laxman.
