ABVP leaders booked for Professor's murder
Ujjain, Aug 31 (UNI) ABVP's Madhya Pradesh unit President Shashi Ranjan Singh Akela and its Organising Secretary Vimal Tomar, who were arrested today in connection with the death of Prof H S Sabharwal, were remanded to CID custody till September 2.
Judicial Magistrate R C Maria ordered their arrest on murder charge on the plea of CID, which was entrusted with the inquiry into the death of Prof Sabharwal and attack on another professor M L Nath during the student's agitation. The police had sought seven days remand.
The arrest of both ABVP leaders was made on the basis of eye-witness accounts and video-clipping of the violence after postponement of students union elections at Madhav College here on August 26, police sources said.
Both Akela and Tomar, who surrendered at the Dewas Gate police station here yesterday, were remanded to judicial custody yesterday.
A total of 23 Congress workers, who were remanded to judicial custody for vandalism in the college during Ujjain bandh on Monday, were today released on bail of Rs 10,000 each and personal bond of like amount by Additional Sessions Judge H K Dube.
Five other ABVP workers, who were arrested earlier in connection with blackening the face of Prof M L Nath, were released on bail.
Following outcry that the BJP government was trying to save the guilty, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan ordered the C I D to probe into the matter. The CID team, led by I G M P Dwivedi, is camping here.
