Metal scrips assist Sensex breach 11,700 mark

Mumbai, Aug 29: The Bombay Stock Exchange(BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex), ably assisted by buying in the midcap and the smallcap sectors and strongly supported by Asian and European markets, closed 88 points up at 11,706.85 points today.

The Sensex today touched a high of 11,739.77 points and a low of 11,651.96 points showing a swing of 112 points.

The metal shares tracking the strong prices on the London Metals Exchange traded high today, whereas, the steel scrips were in circuit today due to pending placements, however, the prices stayed stable to strong causing buying in the midcap steel shares. The shipping shares were steady, due to better freight rates and the VLCC (Ship) rates here crossed above US dollar 60,000 per day.

Amongst the sectoral indices, the IT sector grew 1.46 per cent to 4,298.34 points, PSU sector was up at 1.50 per cent to 5,598.52 points, Teck was up by 1.23 per cent.

Major gainers on the BSE-30 index were Reliance Communications up by 3.17 per cent to Rs 309.10, Maruti Udyog up by 2.59 per cent to Rs 855.45, ITC up by 2.44 per cent to Rs 184.60, Wipro up by 2.32 per cent to Rs 525.10, NTPC up by 2.29 per cent to 127.45 and ONGC up by 2.06 per cent to Rs 1,221.85.

Besides the losers on the index were-HLL down by 2.09 per cent to Rs 234.80, Tata Steel down by 2.06 per cent to Rs 517.00, Gujarat Ambuja down by 0.78 per cent to Rs 114.75, Tata Motors down by 0.76 per cent to Rs 845.30 and Hindalco down by 0.59 per cent to Rs 175.50.

Amongst the side counter gainers, MRD Teck was up 18 per cent, Rana Sugar was up by 10 per cent Murti Agro by 9.0 per cent, India Bulls and Flawless diamonds were up by 8.0 per cent. The losers in the side counters were Binani Industries Cave Projects, Financial Teck, and Balrampur chini all down between 2 per cent to 5 per cent.
