Security tightened for Ganesh idol procession

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 28: Security has been strengthened throughout the district in view of Ganesh idol procession tomorrow.

Police said a total of 346 Ganesh idols had been installed at various places in the district. They will be taken in a procession along notified routes and immersed in River Cauvery and other water bodies tomorrow evening.

More than 500 policemen were deployed in various parts of the City on security duty. The police would maintain extra vigil on the immersion day and deploy additional forces at sensitive and Muslim dominated areas en route.

The devotees were instructed not to carry flag masts, sticks and not to raise slogans during the procession. Bursting of crackers had been banned to prevent any untoward incidents.

Security was also strengthened at Bheema Nagar in the city where an 18-foot Ganesh idol had been installed. Riot control vehicles were also kept ready to tackle any situation, police added.
