Protests galore over arrest of human rights activists
Imphal, Aug 28: Sit-in protests continued today to protest the arrest of L Umakanta, General Secretary and publicity secretary Thabi of the Threatened Peoples' Indigenous Society (TIPS) by police and Assam Rifles earlier.
Reports of sit in protests carried out by various local organisations have come in from Bishenpur, Thoubal, Imphal East, Imphal West districts.
Meanwhile, the localities of Porompat Thawanthaba Leikai, Imphal East from where Umakanta hails has opposed the arrest of the two persons and demanded immediate unconditional release of the two persons.
The All Manipur Joint Action Committee For Prevention of Terrorist Activities has opposed the arrest. The Kuki Inpi Manipur and other social organisations have also issued statements condemning the arrest.
The two were allegedly arrested for having links with some militants which were denied by local organisations.
