62 mm rainfall, devastating winds in Amritsar

Chandigarh, Aug 28 (UNI) The country's northwest plains of Punjab and Haryana received moderate to heavy rainfall at many places in the wee hours today, bringing respite to the people of the region.

Amritsar was lashed by 62 mm rainfall, accompanied by devastating winds that uprooted trees and damaged the paddy crop. Nangal in the Shivalik foothills recieved 82.81 mm. Other parts of Punjab lashed by the monsoon rains included Balachaur (15.1 mm), Patiala (9.4 mm) and Ludhiana (9.0 mm).

In Haryana, Ambala received 35.0 mm rainfall, Kalka (29 mm) and Panipat (3 mm).

The city and its surrounding areas in Punjab and Haryana recieved 19.4 mm rainfall early this morning.

In Himachal Pradesh, the capital town of Shimla received 24.1 mm rainfall. Sundernagar had 32.9 mm rainfall, Solan 12.0 mm and Bhuntar 10.6 mm.

Jammu had 8.7 mm, while Srinagar recorded 2.4 mm rainfall.

The Met office here predicted moderate to rather heavy rainfall or thundershowers at most of the place in Himachal Pradesh, at many places in Punjab and a few places in Haryana in the next 48 hours.

Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Himachal, north and north-east areas of Punjab and north-east region of Haryana in the next 48 hours, according to the weather office.
