Bhopal, Aug 27 (UNI) Stoning and arson during clash between two factions of a mosque led to a tense atmosphere in the state capital's Kamla Park area last night but the situation was in control, police said today.

However, police personnel were deployed in large numbers in the area last night as a precautionary measure. Inspector General of Police Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Collector S K Mishra and other senior officers reached the spot immediately.

Superintendent of Police Anant Kumar Singh said trouble started when a former office bearer of the mosque committee informed police last evening that some suspicious people were put up in the mosque.

Mr Singh denied that police reached the mosque with the intention of undertaking a search.

Soon after, office bearers of the present mosque committee reached police and even proposed police to take stock of situation.

They alleged that the former office bearer had his eyes set on Waqf property and had provided false information to police earlier.

Meanwhile, a crowd gathered near the mosque and ransacked the former office bearer's house, office and shops inside the mosque's premises besides setting his vehicle on fire.

Police used mild force to control the situation and disperse the mob.

Mr Singh said police were undertaking the action for attaching the accused's property on state Waqf Board's direction. The state Waqf Board has conferred all the rights to the new committee.

Meanwhile, a case was registered against the accused for providing false information to police.

Police also registered a case against unidentified persons for damaging the property of the former office bearer.
