Protest for release of human rights activists

Imphal, Aug 27: Sit in protests were carried out today at various places here demanding release of two human rights activists from the custody of police and Assam Rifles.

The Working Committee of the Apunba Lup (WCAL) and other organisations had demanded the release of General Secretary of Threatened Indigenous People's Society L Umakanta and publicity secretary Y Thabi.

Talks between Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and members of various organisations on the release of the two did not yeild anything.

The WCAL members had discussed the matter with senior Cabinet Minister Phungzathang Tonsing last evening regarding early release of two rights activists.

The Amnesty International has also sent a representation to the Chief Minister with a reuest that no form of torture was meted out to the apprehended TIP executives and allow the detainees meet with their lawyers and family members.
