KSRTC proposes steep hike in night journey tariff

Kozhikode, Aug 26 (UNI) The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTRC) is contemplating a steep 25 per cent hike in night journey tariff to salvage the loss making public sector company, Managing Director K P Somarajan today said.

The proposal for the increase from 2100 hrs to 0500 hrs has already been submitted to the government for approval, he told reporters after a meeting of depot managers in the Malabar Region.

Starting courier service and renting out unused office buildings were some other proposals suggested to mop up additional revenue, Mr Somarajan said.

He said as many as 2,200 buses out its 3,800 fleet were not making profits and a plan had been drawn up to reorganise its schedules.

Stating there were many unauthorised private buses plying on nationalised routes, Mr Somarajan said the government had been urged to take stringent action against those violating the rules.

The corporation was planning to introduce electronic ticketing machines in 45 depots in the state, he added.
