Japanese Encephalitis claims 100 lives

Gorakhpur, Aug 26 (UNI) The deadly Japanese Encephalitis (JE) toll in Uttar Pradesh reached 100 with the death of four more children today.

While, three victims hailed from Gorakhpur district, one belonged to Kushinagar.

Last year, JE had claimed over 1,000 lives in UP alone.

Joint director, health Dr Umakant Prasad said the inflow of JE patients continued unabated at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College here.

Since April this year, a total of 596 people -- including 32 fresh cases -- suffering from JE have been admitted at the medical college, of which 111 are still under treatment.

The patients belong to Gorakhpur, Deoria, Maharajganj, Sant Kabirnagar, Kushinagar, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Azamgarh, Gonda and Balrampur district of UP. Some cases also pertain to the adjoining districts of Bihar.

The endemic is known to afflict eastern UP during monsoon every year.
