Delhi to get 36 new hospitals: CM

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) Reiterating the Government's commitment to provide primary healthcare and super specialty services to people in Delhi, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said 36 new hospitals will be constructed in various part of the Capital.

''The government is committed to taking healthcare to the doorsteps of people,'' Ms Dikshit said after dedicating to people the first phase of the ultra modern cancer treatment facility at Delhi State Cancer Institute, GTB Hospital Campus.

She said the construction cost of the four-storeyed Institute, built on an area of 9900 sq km, is Rs 15 crore.

''This is the first such facility that has been installed under the Government of NCT of Delhi. It matches with some of the best facilities in the country in terms of the technical levels, ambience and functioning concepts,'' she added.

''This is the first Government Institution in the country to straightway and exclusively start with the latest Linear Accelerator based precision radiotherapy facility.'' Ms Dikshit said the Institute will provide the most comprehensive and complete facilities for diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer under one roof with indoor facility for 100 patients.

The Institute is already providing free OPD services and free chemotherapy to about 100 patients daily.

''The Institute shall lay due emphasis on predictive and preventive aspects of Oncology and bring awareness in the society about early detection of this disease.'' she added The Delhi Government took the initiative by opening new peripheral hospitals, upgradetion of existing hospitals, augmentation of services by making use of latest technological advancement in medicare system to bring about qualitative improvement in the functioning of the hospitals.

She said in the run up to the Commonwealth Games in 2010, the Capital, particularly East Delhi, will witness tremendous infrastructure development.

''Construction of the Games villages in the Trans Yamuna Area will not only catalyse all round development of the area but would also ensure civic services and civic infrastructure at par with the most developed localities of New Delhi,'' she added.
