UBI opens first branch at Aizwal

Kolkata, Aug 25 (UNI) United Bank of India (UBI) has opened its first branch at Aizwal on Monday.

During 2005-06, the bank also opened branches at Gangtok in Sikkim and Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh. Now, the bank has its presence in the state capitals of all the eight North Eastern states.

The banking scenario in North Eastern Region has undergone a sea change since nationalisation. The first branch of the bank was opened way back in January, 1933 at Silchar.

Since then, the bank has been playing a vital role in the economic development of this region through its present network of 249 branches.

At present, UBI has 173 branches in Assam, 41 branches in Tripura, 15 branches in Manipur, 12 branches in Meghalaya, 3 branches in Arunachal Pradesh and 2 branches in Nagaland and Sikkim and 1 branch at Mizoram.

At the end of June, the total business of the bank in the North -Eastern states stood at Rs 5712 crore consisting deposits of Rs.4261 crore, UBI sources here today said.
