LS adjourned sine die

New Delhi, Aug 25 (UNI) The Lok Sabha was today adjourned sine die after a nearly month-long session which saw the passage of as many as 16 bills including the Food Safety and Standards Bill, 2005, and the Parliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Amendment Bill, 2006 among others.

The House also conducted a structured debate on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Justice Pathak Authority report, the agrarian crisis, the rise in prices of essential commodities and the report of Justice Mukherjee Inquiry Commission probing the disappearance of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose among others, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said in his valedictory speech.

He said as many as nine important matters were raised by way of Calling Attention, and as many as 24 Private Members' Bills were inroduced. However, the House lost over 3 hours and 33 minutes of time due to interuptions and adjournments.

Referring to the unfortunate incident that occured in the house yesterday, Mr Chatterjee said it was a ''matter of great sorrow for him as well as concern'' that after the House was adjourned, some members hurled abuses at and attempted to manhandle each other.'' Stating that for effective functioning of a parliamentary democracy, the participation of the opposition was imperative, the Speaker said there was no better alternative or substitute other than a structured debate and discussion on the floor of the House.
