IT return case against Jaya adjourned to Sep 22
Chennai, Aug 25 (UNI) A Magistrate Court today adjourned to September 22, the four Income-Tax cases against former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa and her close aide Sasikala.
When the cases came up for hearing, First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (EOW-I) J V Raj adjourned the matter to September 22 after recording the submissions made by the Defence Council N Jyothi that the revision petition filed by Ms Jayalalithaa was pending before the Madras High Court.
The Magistrate had directed both of them to appear before the court today. However, Ms Jayalalithaa and Ms Sasikala did not appear before the court and petitions seeking to dispense with their appearance were filed.
The prosecution submitted that the Supreme court had made it clear that once the discharge petitions were dismissed, the court could go ahead with further proceedings. Moreover, the High court had not granted any stay on the revision petition filed by her, challenging the June 14 EOW-I court order refusing to discharge her from the cases.
After recording the submission, the Magistrate adjourned the case to September 22.
The case relates to non-filing of IT returns by Ms Jayalalithaa and Ms Sasikala for the assessment year 1993-94. The other two cases pertained to non-filing of IT returns by M/s Sasi Enterprises, in which they were partners, for the assessment year 1991-92 and 1992-93.
