Arrest of human rights activist flayed

Imphal, Aug 25 (UNI) The arrest of Leitanthem Umakanta, the General Secretary of Threatened Indigenous People's Society (TIPS), by Imphal police yesterday from his residence here, was condemned by various organisations.

Police said the TIPS Secretary, who is also a lawyer, has been remanded to police custody till August 29.

Earlier police and Assam Rifles had apprehended Thabi, the publicity secretary of the same organisation.

TIPS has opposed the arrest of its office bearers.
