CPI moots high-powered committee on Telegana

New Delhi, Aug 24: The Communist Party of India (CPI) today demanded the government set up a high-powered committee to find ways and means to remove socio-economic backwardness in Andhra Pradesh.

''The Committee should also be entrsuted with the task of looking into the possibility of forming a separate Telanngana state,'' CPI Floor Leader in the Lok Sabha Gurudas Dasgupta told mediapersons at a press conference in the precincts of Parliament.

The CPI leader also urged the TRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao to carry on his endeavour to evolve political consensus on his party's demand for a separate Telangana but end his indefinite hunger strike, begun two days ago after the UPA government did not concede his demand. Mr Rao, charging the Congress with breach of trust, had also quit the UPA government.

Stressing that in a federal country like India, which has a multi-lingustic and multi-cultural society, the solution to such a demand took time, Mr Dasgupta also underlined that the creation of a separate state was ''not the answer to remove socio- economic backwardness and regional imbalance in a state.'' Mr Dasgupta however made it clear that his party was not opposed to creation of small states and that their difference on this issue with the CPI(M) was well known.

''The aspirations of the people of Telengana could be fulfilled only through joint efforts by the UPA regime,'' the CPI leader reiterated.
