Jehanabad, Aug 24 (UNI) All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh today expressed concern over laxity in implementation of centrally sponsored National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NRGEs) in selected Bihar districts.

Kicking off a rally here, Mr Singh said that the NDA government has failed to implement the centrally sponsored schemes, which if implemented, would bring socio-economic changes in the backward regions of the state.

Mr Singh expressed his dismay over the fact that despite the threat of drought in major parts of the state, the government's performance in distribution of job cards to the rural unemployed youths below the poverty line, was far from satisfactory.

In most of the districts selected under the NRGEs, there was a gap between the number cards distributed and jobs given to the unemployed.

While praising Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for launching the programme for the rural poor, Mr Singh said that provisions laid out by the Centre for the programme were not fulfilled the state, including the payment of minimum wages of Rs 60 per day.

He appealed to the Congress workers to take up the cudgel on behalf of the toiling BPL families.
