Agitating law students arrested
Chennai, Aug 24 (UNI) The city police today arrested 103 students, including six girls, studying at a private law college in Salem who had been staging 'road roko' since Tuesday demanding reduction in fee.
Police said students resorted to agitation before the State Secretariat which was a prohibited zone and subsequently at the Parrys Corner Area yesterday due to which vehicular traffic was held up for most part of the day.
State Law Minister I Periasamy intervened and assured the agitating students that their demands would be examined within a fortnight.
Despite Minister's assurance, students took to streets causing traffic congestion.
Police rushed to the spot and arrested them. They were later remanded in judicial custody. The students were being brought to Vellore for lodging them at Central Prison there.
Condeming the action, Students Federation of India (SFI) state secretary G Selva said the students wanted the government to direct the college management to adhere to the reservation norms during admissions.
They also wanted the college to collect the fee fixed by the government for students selected under the government quota.
Mr Selva urged the government to release all the arrested students immediately.
