Radhanpur tense but under control

Radhanpur, Gujarat, Aug 23 (UNI) The situation in the North Gujarat town of Radhanpur today was tense but under control after three people, including a woman, were killed when police opened fire at a mob that tried to obstruct a demolition drive yesterday.

However, two platoons of SRP are patrolling the town round the clock.

So far one arrest has been made while many others are likely to be rounded up. ''We have about 500 people listed in the FIR filed by the Mamalatdar of Radhanpur on Tuesday,'' said District Police Chief DB Vaghela.

The incident occurred when district authorities including SDM Ashok Mehta and the mamlatdar, along with a team of policemen and workers were trying to break the wall of a burial ground. This was being done to tackle the water-logging in the town that had received 10 inch rains in the past two days.

But soon, a mob of around 500 people had gathered and attacked the officials and indulged in stone pelting. Police then opened fire in which three people were killed and another three injured. Among the dead is a woman and a homeguard jawan.

Authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 to control the situation.
