Kanpur, Aug 23 (UNI) A group of 18 Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) students today started a hunger strike against the central government decision of providing 27 per cent reservation to OBCs.

Expressing happiness over the overwhelming support from IIT-K teachers, Youth for Equality state convenor Chandrashekhar told UNI he was headstrong in his pledge to see the scrapping of reservation.

Last night, the students had held a four-hour marathon talks for getting the support of IIT-K faculty members.

Chandrashekhar said he was continuously in touch with the student leaders of other leading institutes including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Two days before the arrival of Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Kanpur on August 8, the agitated IIT-K students had formed a human chain and were allegedly assaulted by the police.

The IIT-K students also tried to meet Ms Gandhi, but were not allowed an audience.

Meanwhile, police superintendent Ratan Srivastava said adequate securitymen had been deployed in the area around the IIT-K premises.

Students of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College also blocked the road, that led to a massive jam.
