ATS busts terror plot in Mumbai; kills one

Mumbai, Aug 22: Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), a special unit of the Mumbai police, busted a major terror plot in the metropolis by killing one terrorist and arresting another in an encounter early today.

Talking to mediapersons, Mumbai Commissioner of Police A N Roy said the suspected terrorist came to Mumbai to spread terror in the wake of forthcoming Ganapati festival.

The terrorists, identified as Mohammed Ali alias Abu Usman and Mohammed Riyaz Nabuddin, were Pakistani nationals. Ali, who was killed in the encounter, had come to India few months ago and stayed in Uttar Pradesh as a Hindu. Later, he came here and stayed at Antop Hill in Central Mumbai.

Mr Roy said ATS officials had received a tip-off that two persons were coming to Antop Hill. ATS team, led by Police Inspector Sunil Deshmukh, laid a trap near the Central Government Servants Colony at Antop Hill. At about 0430 hrs, a car came at the specified spot, when the team asked the terrorists to surrender, they allegedly opened fire at them from an AK-47 rifle in their possession. In retaliation, the team also opened fire, in which Ali sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to the Sion hospital, where he was declared dead on admission, while Riyaz is in police custody.

Police have recovered 2.5 kg RDX, one AK-47 rifle, one pistol, 72 live cartridges, three maps including that of the world, Maharashtra and Mumbai.

Riyaz was arrested under the unlawful activities section of Bombay Act and other Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, he added.
