London, Aug 21 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on August 22 since 1900: 1910 - Korea was annexed by Japan after five years as a protectorate.
1922 - Irish politician and Sinn Fein leader Michael Collins was killed in an ambush by Irish opponents. He was one of the signatories of the 1921 Anglo-Irish treaty.
1930 - The two halves of Sydney Harbour Bridge were joined together. It was eventually opened in March 1932.
1942 - Michel Fokine, Russian dancer and choreographer who had a great influence on 20th century classical ballet, died.
1968 - Pope Paul VI arrived in Colombia on the first visit by a pontiff to Latin America.
1973 - Henry Kissinger was named US Secretary of State.
1978 - President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya died in his 80s. His exact date of birth was never firmly established.
2002 - A painting by Venetian master Titian, worth more than 7.6 million dollar was found in a plastic bag on a London street seven years after it was stolen from Longleat House, western England.
2003 - Libya transferred 2.7 billion dollars to the Bank for International Settlements to compensate families of the victims of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
