Tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on birth anniversary

Mumbai, Aug 20: Rich tributes were paid to former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi on his 62nd birth anniversary here today.

Maharashtra Congress President Prabha Rau, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, Mumbai suburban district Guardian minister Chandrakant Handore and state unit office bearers were present at the function held at Tilak Bhavan, the State Unit Headquarters this morning.

Free saris were distributed to 500 women on the occasion. Mr Rane, Ms Rau and others recalled the late leader's contributions to building a modern India and the steps like Panchayati Raj and reservations for women in local bodies.

Mr Rane called for the need to strengthen the Congress party at the Centre and in Maharashtra so that a party government at both places will accelerate the realisation of Rajiv Gandhi's dreams of a modern India.
