AASU welcomes ULFA announcement

Guwahati, Aug 19 (UNI) The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the Unnati Sabha today welcomed the ULFA's announcement of suspension of hostilities, reciprocating the Centre's decision to stop anti-ULFA Army operations.

In a joint statement, ULFA advisor and Sabha general secretary Samujjal Bhattacharyya, Sabha president Rohini Gogoi, AASU president Shankar Roy and general secretary Tapan Gogoi said the ULFA's stand was a positive one.

ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa had informed yesterday that the outfit would suspend offensives as a return gesture to suspension of Army operations announced by the Centre.

The AASU and Unnati Sabha demanded the early release of the top five jailed ULFA leaders to expedite the peace process.
