UK anti-terrorism police arrest two in Wales

LONDON, Aug 17 (Reuters) British police said today they had arrested two people at a port in Wales under anti-terrorism powers but that they were not linked to a suspected plot to blow up transatlantic airliners.

North Wales Police said a 47-year-old man and a woman, 44, were arrested last Friday but details were only made public today.

A police spokeswoman said the two suspects appeared at Holyhead magistrates court today when police sought to extend their detention in custody while inquiries continued.

Holyhead Port is home to ferry services between Wales and Ireland.

''No threat was posed to passengers or staff at Holyhead Port as a result of the arrests,'' the spokeswoman said.

A London police spokeswoman said the arrests were not linked to the continuing investigation in London where 23 people are being quizzed over the suspected plane bomb plot which detectives said they had foiled a week ago.
