Media group says Iraq newspaper editor abducted

NEW YORK, Aug 17 (Reuters) An Iraqi newspaper editor has been abducted by unidentified assailants in Baghdad, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said.

Seif Abd al-Jabbar al-Tamimi, editor of the Al-Akha' newspaper, was seized in the al-Adil neighborhood on Tuesday, the media watchdog said yesterday, citing Journalistic Freedoms Observatory, an organization run by Iraqi journalists.

The committee said the newspaper is affiliated with a party of Iraq's minority Turkmens.

''It remains unclear why al-Tamimi was kidnapped and no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. CPJ is investigating to determine whether the abduction is related to journalism,'' the committee said in a statement.
