CM orders CID probe into BESU student's death

Kolkata, Aug 17 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today ordered a CID inquiry into the death of a student of Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) following campus violence.

''CID has been asked to probe the death of Soumik Basu,'' Mr Bhattacharjee told reporters as the issue turned into a statewide debate over the oft-repeated clashes among rival students unions.

Earlier in an emergent meeting, the BESU board decided to seek a high-level inquiry into the incident and Vice-Chancellor Nikhil Ranjan Banerjee conveyed it to the Chief Minister.

Soumik, a third year BESU student, died on August 12 after remaining in coma for four days. He was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood near a hostel building during a clash between the supporters of the CPI(M)-backed Students Fderation of India(SFI) and the rival Independent Consolidation(IC) on August eight.

Soumik's unnatural death has brought to the fore several queries about the reasons behind recurrence of terrible violence among the BESU students belonging to rival unions over petty matters like union elections despite preventive steps taken by the authority.

Several political parties and social organisations condemned the incident and protested recurrence of violence in students politics.
