Central team to visit flood-hit areas of K'taka

Bangalore, Aug 17: A Central team will arrive here next week to assess the situation in the flood-ravaged North Karnataka region, which witnessed large-scale destruction for about a month due to heavy discharge of water from the rain-hit Maharashtra. Official sources told sources here yesterday that the team would tour flood-affected areas of Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur and Uttara Kannada districts.

The sources said the State Government, which had already sought Central assistance of over Rs 1,600 crore for taking up relief works, was preparing a fresh report on the extent of damage to submit another memorandum.

It may be recalled that lakhs of people had been evacuated to safer places as flood waters marooned their villages following rivers Krishna and Bhima being in spate owing to heavy discharge from Ujjini and Veerbhatkal dams in the neighbouring state. Standing crops in thousands of hectares had submerged in the deluge, besides a multitude of houses.

Relief centres had been set up in the flood hit-areas to provide succour to those affected. As many as 14 people had reportedly lost their lives in flood-related incidents.
