Rehab of flood affected to begin from October two

Mumbai, Aug 16 (UNI) The construction of homes to rehabilitate people affected due to floods in Maharashtra will begin from October two.

The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh here today.

Mr Deshmukh directed concerned officials to ensure that construction work be completed before the onset of monsoon next year.

He said the construction should be done taking into consideration the local needs. Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Dr Patangrao Kadam was also present at the meeting.

Mr Deshmukh said in urban areas, MHADA should construct the new tenaments which should be in multi storeyed buildings. In rural areas, the responsibility of construction should be taken up by rural development department and social justice and tribal affairs department should look after construction of homes of flood affected belonging to backward class and tribal communities.

The Chief Minister said about 9662 homes would be constructed in 69 villages situated in 16 districts to rehabilitate the 2005 flood affected. Each home would cost Rs 1.5 lakh. The construction of homes would cost Rs 150 crore and another Rs 30 crore for civic amenities.

Farmers with farm land of their own would be given 1500 sq.ft and those without farm land would be given 1000 sq.ft developed land. In the new townships, roads, gardens,schools, sewage and drainage systems would be developed, he said.

Meanwhile, in Pondicherry as part of the tsunami rehabilitation, the Maharashtra government would construct 2000 houses in eight villages at the cost of Rs 53.38 crore.

In Kerala's Kollam district, the government is constructing 250 houses, school buildings, water supply, internal roads, electricity supply and sewage works in Allapad village which is worst affected by tsunami. The works are expected to be completed in nine months, he added.
