Ahmedabad faces flood threat, 30,000 people evacuated
Ahmedabad, Aug 16 (UNI) The city is faced with a fresh flood threat following heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Sabarmati river since last evening.
District Collector D Thara told UNI here today that the city is facing a threat of flash floods following release of water from the Dharoi dam.
Mrs Thara said the administration has prepared itself to move residents of low-lying areas to safer places in Ahmedabad city and surrounding downstream villages.
Since last evening, over 25,000 residents have been shifted to safer places in Ahmedabad city and another 5,000 people have been evacuated from the surrounding villages.
The District Collector said the civic administration and fire brigade have been put on high alert and are prepared to tackle any eventualities.
Flood Control Room sources said over one lakh cusecs of water are being released from the Dharoi Dam since 0100 hrs today as against the inflow of 1.75 lakh cusecs. At present, the water level in the Dharoi dam stands at 619.37 feet against its full reservoir level of 622 feet.
As many as 69 water reservoirs have been filled to their capacity in the State and high alert has been sounded in the jurisdiction of 96 water reservoirs. An alert has been sounded in the jurisdiction of 13 reservoirs while a warning has been issued in the jurisdiction of 19 others.
