Youths create flutter by entering Fort St George precincts
Chennai, Aug 15 (UNI) Two youths, one of them in police uniform, gave anxious moments to security personnel when they sneaked into Fort St George just a few hours before Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was to hoist the national flag.
The two brothers - Kannan and Sriram had gained entry through the back entrance of the fort and were walking towards the function area near the ramparts, when police intercepted them.
Kannan, an engineering graduate and Sriram, a second year dental student, came in a two-wheeler and parked the motorcycle at the Island grounds before gaining entry through the back, police said.
Interrogation revealed that several impersonation cases were pending against Kannan at suburban Madipakkam police station for attempting to cheat people by impersonating IPS officials.
They also recovered from him a fake identity card, which described him as a police official.
Police were interrogating the siblings on the motive for their visit to Fort St George, which among other departments, houses the state Secretariat.
The incident raised eyebrows about the arrangements made by police who were providing six-tier security cover to Mr Karunanidhi since Sunday, in the wake of a suicide bomb threat to him seeking the declaration of results of the constabulary examination conducted by the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Service Recruitment Board before August 15.
