Two killed by militants in Tripura
Agartala, Aug 15: The 60th Independence day in Tripura began with the killing of two persons by the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) in Dhalai district today.
Police sources said an armed group of suspected NLFT guerrillas shot dead two persons at Dhaniram Para under Ganganagar Police station area.
The two persons were shot dead at point blank range when they were asleep in the wee hours today, police added.
However, there were no reports of violence in other parts of the state so far and the Independence day celebrations were carried peacefully, the sources said.
The security measures had been beefed up throughout the state to avoid any untoward situation, police said.
The security at vulnerable entry points to the state in the National Highway 44 had also been tightened and the vehicles were checked with the help of bomb detectors and sniffer dogs, the sources addesd.
Meanwhile, a group of underground NLFT militants unsuccessfully fired a rocket launcher on a TSR camp under Chamanu police station area here yesterday, police informed.
However, no casualty had been reported but a civilian was caught in the exchange of fire, sustaining minor bullet injuries, and was rushed to the nearby hospital.
