Tri-colour hoisted at historic Vellore Fort after 200 years

Vellore, Aug 15 (UNI) After 200 years, the national flag was hoisted at the historic Vellore Fort on the occasion of 60th Independence Day.

District Collector Dharmendra Pradip Yadav hoisted the tricolour and distributed welfare assistace of more than Rs six lakh to 110 persons on the occasion.

It was on July 10, 1806, Indian sepoys from three battalions of the 23rd Regiment and four companies of the 69th Foot revolted and attacked the Europeon barracks stationed in the Vellore Fort.

This revolt was described as the first instance of a rebellion against the British rule, followed by 1857 sepoy mutiny.

In Tiruchirapalli, District Collector Ashish Vachhani hoisted the tri-colour flag at the Anna stadium here, amid tight security.

Mr Vachhani watched an impressive parade by the Armed Police personnel, Home Guards and NCC cadets.

He distributed various welfare assistance to the tune of Rs 60,37,318 to over 302 beneficiaries and honoured 33 freedom fighters. Cultural programmes were performed by students of various colleges to the mark occasion.

District Collectors of neighbouring Pudukkottai, Perambalur and Karur also unfurled the tri-colour.
