Postal Dept to launch air cargo service soon: Maran

Chennai, Aug 15: The Department of Posts will soon launch air cargo service to facilitate speedy delivery, Union Communication and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran said.

The service would be introduced in the North Eastern states in the first phase and would later be extended to other places, he said after launching the 'One India One Rate' scheme here on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Postal Department's speed post service yesterday.

Mr Maran also announced that the Department had taken steps to introduce a new speed post service called 'Same Day, Same Delivery'.

Observing that the postal service in the North Eastern region was not satisfactory at present, he said the air cargo service was being planned to face the challenge.

He said new value added services and new features would be introduced in order to make the Postal Department more competitive.

The Minister said post offices would function as department stores in the future offering various services to customers.
