Mizos show the way to peace on I Day

Aizawl, Aug 15: Even as the rest of the country was concerned about high security measures, in sharp contrast Independence Day was celebrated amid much fanfare in Mizoram.

The scene was almost unbelieveable here, as hardly any security personnel were seen and the entrance to the main venue at Assam Rifles ground only had a metal detector door. Nor was there extra fencing, nor extra barracking as people flicked the ground and celebrated the day with much fanfare.

There was neither frisking nor car checks near the venue.

Assistant Superindent of Police Mawia told ''Since our state is one of the peaceful state's in the country we are confident enough that no untoward incident would take place.'' However, he added that Mizoram police is always on high alert to meet any eventuality.

He maintained, ''though we have not deployed any extra police personnel in and around city, all the police stations have been instructed to keep high vigil.'' On the occasion Chief Minister also underlined that Mizoram has remained one of the most peaceful state in India. The assistance and cooperation extended by the people and the local voluntary organisation to the law enforcing agencies in detecting and prevention of crime has been quite encouraging.
